There are at least 150,000 different species of moths, compared to 15,000 different species of butterflies. Moths were alive 140 million years ago, while butterflies were alive 40 million years ago.
The caterpillar of the Giant Atlas Moth can stay in its cocoon for 3 to 5 years, then only live for 3 to 5 days as an adult. Rather than laying their eggs on leaves, some species of butterflies simply release their eggs in mid-flight. After emerging, it takes about 30 minutes for a butterfly's wings to properly expand and dry. Butterflies smell with their antennae and taste with their feet.
